How 2025 Tax Brackets Work

1

Marginal Rates

The U.S. uses a progressive tax system. You only pay each rate on income within that bracket's range — not your entire income. Moving into a higher bracket only affects the money above that threshold.

2

Standard Deduction

For 2025, the standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers, $30,000 for married filing jointly, and $22,500 for head of household. This amount is subtracted from your income before tax is calculated.

3

Effective Rate vs Marginal Rate

Your marginal rate is your highest tax bracket. Your effective rate is the average you actually pay across all brackets. Most people's effective rate is significantly lower than their marginal rate.

Tax Bracket FAQ

Does my entire income get taxed at my highest bracket?

No. Only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that rate. For example, if you're single and earn $60,000, only the last ~$11,525 is taxed at 22% — the rest is taxed at lower rates.

What's the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

Your marginal tax rate is the rate on your last dollar earned (your highest bracket). Your effective tax rate is the average rate you actually pay across all brackets combined. Most people's effective rate is about half their marginal rate.

Are these the same as IRS brackets?

Yes. These brackets are directly from IRS Revenue Procedure 2024-40, which publishes the official 2025 inflation-adjusted tax brackets. For the official source, visit IRS.gov.
